Way back when they were using marble columns, the people selling the columns would carve out the centers and fill it with wax.So the people buying them started asking "Is it without wax?" Or in other words "Are you sincere?".

Thats not totally correct. The phrase actually applies to sculptures. When the sculptor would cause a crack or chip off too much of a sculpture, then he was smooth it out with wax to cover up the imperfections. Thus the saying "Is it without wax?" does refer to a person being sincere, and that they are not covering something up.
